“Worse than hell on earth.”
That’s what a Red Cross official recently called the humanitarian crisis. From March 2nd, Israel began a harsh blockade of Gaza, stopping the work of trusted humanitarian agencies and preventing the entry of food, medicine, fuel, supplies, and infant formula into the strip.
The U.S. must act NOW. We must not look away.
Two weeks ago, Senator Peter Welch’s (D-VT) Senate Resolution 224 garnered the support of every single Senate Democrat other than John Fetterman.
Today, House Democrats have the chance to demonstrate the same commitment to humanity.
Now, House Resolution 473 has been introduced by the U.S. Representatives Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Bill Keating (MA-09), Valerie Foushee (NC-04), and Becca Balint (VT-AL) modeled on the Senate Resolution that calls on the Trump Administration to use all diplomatic tools at its disposal to ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilians in Gaza and simultaneously brings about the release of the hostages.
The House Resolution already has the support of nearly 90 Democrats – will you help bring the rest on board?
The Israeli-directed, U.S.-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) is a cynical ploy, a militarization of humanitarian assistance that is not only vastly insufficient for the needs of millions of starving people but risks setting a precedent that could have global consequences for the manipulation of aid to serve political agendas of combatants. The only effective solution – and the only legal one – is for Israel to open Gaza to the unrestricted supply of humanitarian aid. The U.S. has the power, the influence, and the moral responsibility to press Israel to do so, and thereby stop mass starvation and prevent further suffering.
Why Our Representatives Must Co-Sponsor (or Support) This Resolution Now
-
- According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) over a million people, half of Gaza, face catastrophic food insecurity.
- 10,000 children in Gaza are now suffering from acute malnutrition, a clear sign of imminent famine.
- All 25 UN-supported bakeries in Gaza shut down in March due to a lack of wheat and fuel, and families ran out of food rations
- The health system in Gaza is under bombardment and near total collapse
- Fatalities due to gunfire at aid distribution are mounting. More than 100 starving people desperately seeking food have been killed by security forces at the GHF sites since the United States- and Israel-backed GHF started operating on May 27th.
- We’ve said this before, and we’ll say it again, with urgency, that this is fundamentally against America’s interests. We are actively compromising our standing on the global stage and exacerbating national security risks. Funneling billions in taxpayer dollars to a foreign nation implicated in war crimes and grave human rights abuses, while children starve, is utterly indefensible.
It’s time for America to find the courage to lead with both strength and conscience.
